After Grain in Ear, scallions entered the harvest period. Recently, villagers in riverside towns such as Longkong Town, Gaojia Town, and Huwei Town have begun to harvest scallions, and the fields are busy.
The harvesting period of scallions is concentrated in about 15 days. To enhance the market competitiveness of characteristic agricultural products, in addition to the existing brokers selling scallions, our county has explored and established a "company + base + farmer" industrialization operation model for scallions. Recently, a deep-processing enterprise located in Gaojia Town has been operating at full capacity to purchase a large amount of locally grown scallions. After screening, cleaning, removing roots and membranes, and pickling, it reserves raw materials for subsequent deep processing.
Our county has a history of more than 70 years of scallion cultivation, and the planting area of scallions has been maintained at around 15,000 mu. Scallions are similar in appearance to garlic and have the health benefits of reducing fat, reducing inflammation, and preventing cardiovascular diseases. Scallion salad and pickled scallions are not only common dishes on the tables of many southern regions but are also popular in Southeast Asia and are one of China's export-earning vegetables. Currently, the deep-processing enterprises in our county have developed six specifications of two flavors, sweet and sour and pickled pepper, which are exported to five countries, further broadening the channels for farmers to increase income and become wealthy.
"The annual comprehensive output value of the scallion industry in our county exceeds 100 million yuan. Products are not only sold domestically to Hunan, Jiangxi, and other places but are also exported to countries such as Japan, South Korea, Malaysia, Thailand, and Australia. The export volume has been maintained at around 3,000 tons, and the export value is stable at around 20 million yuan." said Qin Rong, director of the Foreign Trade Economics Section of the County Commerce Commission.
