Before the Dragon Boat Festival, villagers in Jian Guo Village, Gaojia Town, Fengdu County, Chongqing have been busy in the terraced fields in the mountains, processing "shallots," a specialty crop that has been cultivated locally for over 70 years.
Farmers in Gaojia Town, where Jian Guo Village is located, and several surrounding townships, plant shallots and other low-growing crops such as peanuts in their fields every November. The shallots mature around the Dragon Boat Festival the following year, and villagers harvest them en masse, waiting for local processing companies to purchase them.
Don't underestimate these unassuming "little guys." They are not only a source of increased income for farmers, but have also successfully "gone overseas," establishing their own large markets in countries such as Japan, South Korea, and Malaysia.
