What are the differences between scallions and garlic?
The bulb of Chinese chives is ovate, pointed at both ends, similar to that of an onion, with a smooth surface.
1. Different Bulbs
The bulb of Chinese chives is ovate, pointed at both ends, similar to that of onions. Its surface is smooth, with fibrous roots at the base. A single Chinese chive plant has only one bulb. Garlic bulbs, on the other hand, are round or oval and divided into several cloves; they are milky white in color.
2. Different Taste
Chinese chives have a mild flavor, lacking the pungent odor of garlic. They have a crisp, pleasant, and slightly sweet taste, often used in cold dishes or pickles. Garlic, however, has a strong pungent odor and a crisp, spicy taste. It is mostly used as a condiment or ingredient to enhance flavor.
3. Different Growing Environments
Chinese chives are highly adaptable and originated in China. They are mostly grown in the Yangtze River basin and southern provinces of China. There are both cultivated and wild varieties. Garlic originated in Central Asia and the Mediterranean region and was introduced to China during the Han Dynasty. It is now cultivated throughout China.
